5 Tips for Properly Storing and Displaying Your Action Figures

Action figures are more than just toys – they are valuable collectibles that can hold sentimental and monetary worth. Whether you’re an avid collector or just starting to build your collection, it’s essential to store and display your action figures properly.

The right care ensures that your figures maintain their value and condition for years to come.

1. Choose the Right Display Case

A well-designed display case is one of the most crucial aspects of showcasing your action figures. Not only does it help keep your figures safe, but it also enhances the visual appeal of your collection. When selecting a display case, consider the following factors:

Material and Design

Opt for a display case made from sturdy materials like acrylic, glass, or wood. Acrylic and glass are ideal choices for protecting your figures from dust and accidental damage while allowing for clear visibility.

UV Protection

Sunlight can be harmful to action figures, causing fading and deterioration over time. Look for display cases that offer UV protection to shield your figures from harmful rays. This is especially important for vintage or rare figures, which are more vulnerable to damage from exposure to sunlight. UV-filtering glass or acrylic will help preserve the colours and materials of your action figures.

2. Keep Figures Away from Direct Sunlight

While a display case can help protect your figures, the placement of your display is just as important. Direct sunlight can cause your action figures to fade and weaken over time, particularly those made of plastic. UV rays can also cause colours to become dull, affecting the appearance of your figures. To prevent this, it’s essential to place your display case away from direct sunlight.

Place your figures in a room with minimal exposure to natural light, such as a shaded area or a room that doesn’t get a lot of sun. If you must place your display near a window, consider using window treatments like blinds or curtains to limit sunlight exposure. Alternatively, you can use UV-blocking window film to protect your figures from harmful rays without sacrificing natural light.

3. Store Figures in Their Original Packaging

Keeping figures in their original packaging protects them from environmental factors like dust and dirt. The packaging also prevents figures from being exposed to light, which helps preserve their colours and integrity. If you’re storing figures for the long term, original packaging offers an extra layer of protection against accidental damage.

If you choose to store figures in their original packaging, ensure that the packaging is in good condition. Keep the packaging away from extreme temperatures, as this can cause the materials to degrade. Avoid sealing the figure in plastic bags, as they can trap moisture and cause damage over time. Consider using clear plastic storage bins for added protection if you need to store several figures in their packaging.

4. Use Proper Temperature and Humidity Control

Environmental factors like temperature and humidity can have a significant impact on the condition of your action figures. Extreme heat or cold can cause materials like plastic and paint to warp, crack, or fade. Likewise, high humidity can lead to mould, rust, and deterioration of the materials.

Action figures should be stored in a climate-controlled environment with a temperature between 18°C and 22°C. Avoid storing them in areas that experience large temperature fluctuations, such as attics, basements, or garages. Extreme heat can cause the paint to bubble, while extreme cold can cause the plastic to become brittle.

Humidity levels should be kept between 40% and 60% to prevent moisture damage. High humidity can lead to rust on metal parts or mould growth on plastic figures. If you live in a particularly humid area, consider using a dehumidifier in the room where you store your collection. Alternatively, silica gel packs can be placed inside display cases or storage bins to absorb excess moisture.

5. Handle Your Figures with Care

Proper handling is essential to preserving the condition of your action figures. Whether you’re moving them for display or simply repositioning them, handling your figures with care reduces the risk of damage.

Before touching your action figures, make sure your hands are clean and free from oils, dirt, or lotions. Even the natural oils from your skin can cause discoloration or damage to your figures over time. For extra protection, consider wearing cotton gloves when handling rare or delicate figures. This helps prevent oils and dirt from transferring to the figure’s surface.

Properly storing and displaying your action figures is crucial for maintaining their condition and preserving their value.

These tips will help you showcase your figures in the best light, while also protecting them from the wear and tear that can occur over time. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or just starting, these practices will allow you to enjoy your action figures to the fullest!
